Asmat district can be accessed only through water and air transportations because of its territory that borders on Arafuru Sea and is surrounded by Jayawijaya mountainous areas. The presence of Ewer airort in Agats sub-district and an airport in the costal area of Kasuari enables easy access to the district.

Asmat tribesmen has been well-known allover the world because of their artistic carvings and primitive sculptures. They occupy themselves from generation to generation with the artistic carvings, especially the primitive sculptures for the use in traditional ceremonies. The primary food stuff of Asmat tribesmen is sago, while other Papua people eat various kinds of edible tubers. Sago grows very well in the forests of the district and Asmat tribesmen are highly dependent on the sago palm forests for the supply of their primary food stuff in addition to other forest products as iron wood for traditional canoe and for building materials and for artistic carvings and for firewood. Actually, the forests not only provide them with timbers, but also with other non-timbers such as eaglewood, candlenut trees and their fruits, resin and rattan.

There is another sector with huge potentials, which is fishery. There are 23 sub-districts of the prior Merauke district and seven of them directly borders on Arafuru Sea and 5 of them belong to the present Asmat district. It provides the district with a precious opportunity to develop the fishery sector. The production of the fishery sector includes some species of big fish such as sharks in addition to crabs, sea cucumber, and squids. The Arafuru Sea has huge fishery potentials because it represents one of the richest catching territorial waters.
