The forest areas of Asmat district as found in the Forest and Territorial Waters Map are classified into 7 functions, which are natural preservation forests, protected forests, limited production forests, production forests, conservation production forests and territorial waters. Additionally, there are the areas for special uses that include small areas of 8,835 hectares (0.4%), which are the settlements of Asmat tribesmen south of Baliem valley. Natural preservation forests include Lorentz natural preservation, consisting of a half of Asmat district that borders on Mimika district in the West. The majority of production forests are situated in the costal areas that border on the protected forests in the sub-district Agats. The classification of the forests in Asmat district based on their functions is summarized in the table below.
